Join the Primeau Lab

Dr. Codie Primeau (he/him; il) is recruiting Master’s and Doctoral students for positions in musculoskeletal rehabilitation and chronic health research. His lab tackles real-world challenges in mobility, health outcomes, and equitable care, with a focus on arthritis, chronic pain, physiotherapy, pelvic health, clinical biomechanics, health economic evaluation, and 2S/LGBTQQIA+ health. Using quantitative and qualitative methods, students will engage in research designed in collaboration with patient and community partners, ensuring studies make a tangible difference for those most impacted by chronic conditions.

Students in the lab will have the chance to:

  • Contribute to novel research evaluating clinical and cost-effectiveness of rehabilitation and surgical interventions.
  • Collaborate directly with patient and community partners to co-develop research driven by community priorities and needs.
  • Access funding opportunities through Western University, its associated Bone & Joint Institute, and Arthritis Research Canada, including potential support to attend national and international conferences.

Who we’re looking for:

  • Strong academic performance and enthusiasm for graduate-level research.
  • Excellent communication and teamwork skills.
  • Individuals who value equity, diversity, and inclusion in research and clinical care.
  • Interest or experience in musculoskeletal health, patient engagement, and/or equity-focused research is a plus (not mandatory).

Prospective Exchange Student Seeking Research Supervision in Computer Vision, Biomechanics, or Rehabilitation Engineering

Hyejeong Choi is a PhD student in Electrical and Computer Engineering at the University of British Columbia, currently pursuing an exchange opportunity and seeking a host supervisor and research lab.

Hyejeong’s home supervisor is Dr. Peyman Servati, PhD, PEng a professor in the department of electrical and computer engineering and the director of the Flexible Electronics and Energy Lab (FEEL).

Hyejeong specializes in wearable sensor systems, computer vision, and human-computer interaction for musculoskeletal rehabilitation. Hyejeong’s current research merges piezoelectric nanofiber sensors and IMUs into a smart knee sleeve that monitors neuromuscular activity and joint kinematics in ACL-injured patients. Hyejeong has extensive experience in multimodal data fusion and Human Activity Recognition (HAR), leveraging machine learning to classify rehabilitation exercises and detect asymmetries. Additionally, she developed a motion capture-to-smartphone pipeline for markerless motion estimation, aiming to enable realistic, clinic-based data collection for remote patient monitoring.

Going forward, Hyejeong plans to integrate force plate and insole data into a telerehabilitation framework, providing real-time force feedback through biomechanical simulations. To achieve this, she is looking to gain expertise in OpenSim and Unity, and welcomes collaborations with labs focusing on computer vision, biomechanics, or rehabilitation engineering to advance accessible, patient-centered care.

Service Design in Health Research Workshop

The CIHR Institute of Musculoskeletal Health and Arthritis (IMHA) and the Institute of Health Services and Policy Research (IHSPR) will be hosting the Service Design in Health Research Workshop on June 23rd from 1 to 4 PM EDT.

This interactive workshop is designed for research team members looking to improve health interventions using design thinking. Participants will explore frameworks and methods to refine the development of health interventions, and learn about design heuristic techniques and assumption mapping to identify gaps in their research framing and methodology. This session will also provide participants with strategies for improving research design and fostering meaningful collaborations with underserved communities, especially diverse and underrepresented groups for shorter projects.

The deadline to submit an Expression of Interest to participate is June 13th, and seats will be offered first-come, first-served.

AI Lay Summary Patient Partner Review Committee

We’re excited to share that the Network has been developing an AI Lay Summary Assistance Tool, designed to support knowledge translation by generating accessible lay summaries directly from the full text of peer-reviewed journal articles. The lay summary tool will soon be available for Network members to use. After creating each lay summary, we will be asking the article authors and a patient partner review committee to review the lay summaries for accuracy and accessibility.

We are in the process of creating the patient partner review committee and are seeking a few more interested patientpartners to join. The lay summaries can be reviewed asynchronously and at the discretion of the patient partner, meaning that there will not be a large time commitment involved.

If you know of any patient partners who may be interested in joining the review committee, please have them reach out to the Network Coordinator scrocke6@uwo.ca for further details.

IMPACTs LAB – Dr. Myles O’Brien Paid Graduate Student Recruitment

Dr. Myles O’Brien is recruiting students interested in Graduate studies (Master’s or Doctoral) and studying MSK health & active aging. Students interested in promoting movement in community/hospital settings, epidemiology, frailty, and/or musculoskeletal function with objective measures are particularly encouraged to apply. His research program spans clinical trial, applied mechanistic, and epidemiological study designs. Specific thesis projects and independent studies will be determined based on interest and desired skillsets.

Funding is in place to support student scholarships related to MSK health clinical trials and epidemiological projects.

The successful applicant(s) will work within Dr. O’Brien’s research team and collaborate closely with the multidisciplinary IMPACTs lab. The successful applicant will be embedded within the Department of Medicine at the Centre de Formation Medicalé Nouveau-Brunswick in Moncton, New Brunswick.

General & Specific Requirements:

  • Ability to write and speak in both English and French
  • Sufficient course marks for graduate studies.
  • Available for in-person work in New Brunswick.
  • Experience working with older adults, wearable technology, coding, big datasets, health outcomes, MSK function and/or cardiovascular function is an asset (not mandatory).

Apply to attend the virtual Canadian Arthritis Summer School (CASS)

Be part of the Canadian Arthritis Summer School (CASS) from June 3-5, 2025. This unique 3-day virtual event will bring together patient partners and trainees to foster learning, collaboration, and innovation in arthritis research.

Summer school sessions will include:

  • A day in the life of a researcher, clinician, patient partner and trainee
  • How to appraise grant applications and scientific articles
  • Indigenous Engagement and being an ally in research
  • And other sessions including scientific talks, best practice in patient engagement in research, and interactive skill-building workshops

General Requirements

  • Applicants must be graduate students registered and attending a Canadian post-secondary institution.
  • Applicants must be a member of the Canadian MSK Rehab Research Network (If you are not already a Network member, apply here: https://mskrehabnet.com/about/current-members/)
  • Applicants will be required to include a 750-word Letter of Interest and a 2-page brief Curriculum Vitae (see the application for more details).

Important Details

  • There is no registration fee for any attendee.
  • Funding support will be provided to trainees who need to travel from out of province in order to attend the summer school. Funding support will include your accommodation and $500 for travel from a neighbouring province, or $1000 for travel from elsewhere (e.g., Ontario, Nova Scotia, etc.). Local students may be able to attend without funding as they will not need accommodation or travel support.
  • Supervisors are expected to provide a minimum of $500 to help cover travel costs for their students. Any trainee not located in the Greater Calgary area (for the University of Calgary Summer School) or the Greater Vancouver area (for the University of British Columbia Summer School) and that needs travel support must provide written proof that their supervisor is providing $500 support to assist with travel expenses.
  • We will be accepting trainees from across Canada. However, due to limited funds and capacity we cannot accept all applications. A review process will be used to determine the successful candidates.
  • Please read the Application Instructions (at the beginning of the Qualtrics form) thoroughly before completing the application as each summer school has its own requirements.

Assistant or Associate Professor Western University School of Physical Therapy

The Western University Faculty of Health Sciences invites applications for a full-time probationary (tenure-track) position at the rank of Assistant or Associate Professor in the School of Physical Therapy. Academic responsibilities will include teaching, research, and service in the area of practice of Upper Extremity Health and Rehabilitation.

Qualified applicants must have a PhD or equivalent in a related field and be eligible for licensure with the College of Physiotherapists of Ontario. Applicants with expertise and a track record in upper extremity clinical research are encouraged to apply.

The deadline for receipt of applications is May 22, 2025.
